Honor 9N review: Honor finally has an answer to Xiaomi
For a while now, Xiaomi has set the benchmark for other smartphone brands. Xiaomi posed questions to other brands by offering phones that had good specs at retailed them at ultra competitive prices. But so far, not many have been able to crack the Xiaomi model. Perhaps Honor has finally done it.

Honor has always designed some really good looking and powerful smartphones but the absurd pricing of them didn’t worked in company’s favour. However, learning from the past mistakes the company has now geared up to launch phones with high-end specs and that too with a competitive price tag. The recently-launched Honor 9N is the result of this. The smartphone offers quite good specs like a dual camera, a powerful processor, latest operating system and top it all a really good design with a bezel-less display. In order to make the deal further enticing the smartphone has a starting price tag of Rs 11,999. At this price point no other company in the Indian market is offering this package. But is package turnout to be a game changer for the company? We tried to find out by using the Honor 9N.
Design

Design
Honor is known for designing some really good looking smartphones and Honor 9N is no different. The smartphone comes with a good looking design made using glass and metal. The rear of the device is coated with 2.5D curved glass the round edges offers a comfortable grip to the user. The FHD+ display comes with extremely thin bezels on the side and a notch just like the iPhone X. The notch consists of the speaker grille and the selfie camera. The rear of the device is home to the horizontally placed dual rear camera with the LED flash, circular fingerprint sensor and the Honor branding. The right side consists of the power button and the volume rocker keys. While the left just has the SIM card tray. The chin of the handset has a 3.5mm audio jack, micro USB charging port and a mono speaker. We found the design of Honor 9N very attractive and well build for this price segment. To conclude design is an area where the brand has consistently improved and Honor 9N is a testament of the same.
Display
The Honor 9N comes with a 5.84-inch full HD+ display with 1080x2280 pixel resolution. Covered with Corning Gorilla glass the display has curved edges which adds to its looks. Following the current trend, the Honor 9N also comes with a bezel-less display with iPhone X-like notch. The notch consists of the speaker grille and the front camera. The little bits of bezels in the sides and at the bottom literally merges into the screen and gives a good viewing experience to the users. Along with this, you also have an option to enable or disable the notch as per your need. When the notch is disabled, a black bezel will appear on the top of the display not hampering the design of the smartphone. The screen offers pretty good viewing angles and an immersive user experience. The display is bright enough for a budget smartphone and is also not reflective under direct sunlight. For a better user experience, the company has also incorporated various colour modes such as warm, cool and others so that users can adjust the colour as per their needs and surroundings. There is also an eye comfort mode which filters the harmful blue light in order to relieve visual fatigue. This mode covers the display with a yellow tint. Along with this, there is also a View mode. The View mode controls the size of interface elements such as images and characters. The elements will appear bigger in the large mode whereas the content will be displayed in small mode. Users need to drag a slider inside the display menu to use this mode. Another interesting feature of the display is that it manually allows the user to adjust the screen resolution. You will have the liberty to have both HD+ and FHD+ resolution for the display. The feature comes handy when you are left with a little battery backup, you can easily switch to HD+ mode and help your device last a little longer. Overall, the Honor 9N offers a really good display experience. We can easily say that it offers the best display when we compare it to other devices in this price segment.
Performance
The Huawei Honor 9N is powered by the company’s own Kirin 659 processor paired with 4GB of RAM. The handset offers 64GB internal storage which can be expanded further by inserting a microSD card. The smartphone comes with hybrid-dual SIM support which means that you can either use two SIM cards or one SIM card and microSD card at the same time. The smartphone performed fairly well when it comes to multi-tasking or using heavy duty editing apps. Whether it was movie streaming or gaming the smartphone doesn't disappoint us. In fact, it performed very well in comparison to the recently launched Samsung Galaxy J8 which is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor. The Samsung phone lagged a bit while the Honor 9N delivered a smooth performance. We also ran benchmark test and the device secured 823 on single core and a total of 3222 on multi-core. On AnTuTu it scored 51873 which is pretty decent for a device in this price category.
The Honor 9N comes with a mono speaker grill which undoubtedly offers a good audio experience. The 3D surround sound effect further improves the sound experience and the users also have the option choose from Near, Front, or Wide style. Along with this, the users can also connect multiple Honor 9N and stream the same music at the same time.
Coming to the software, the Honor 9N runs Android 8.0 Oreo operating system topped with the company’s own layer of customisation EMUI 8.0. The UI is quite clean but it comes with its own share of bloatware. The device consists of various apps from Honor along with Facebook. The UI also has various modes that claim to enhance user experience. There is a gaming mode allows you to enjoy your games without distraction. The Honor 7C also provides many functional features, including One-Click Split, Navigation Dock and many others. This time the company has also incorporated a bike mode on special feedback of its users. The bike mode allows users to use their Bluetooth and the headset will be disabled and calls will be automatically answered with voice or SMS based on the Ride mode settings.
Camera
Since the launch of Honor smartphones camera has always been the company’s high point and the Honor 9N excels in this department as well. The smartphone comes equipped with a dual camera with 13MP and 5MP cameras with LED flash. The dual-lens camera features one lens for capturing the image and another for depth detection. The front of the device comes with an 8MP shooter for capturing selfies. During out testing we found that the images captured took out to be really good. The secondary lens worked really well when we captured images with depth effect.
Battery performance
Talking about the battery, the Honor 9N is backed by a 3000 mAh battery. The smartphone managed to last up to 12 hours on a single charge. This is just satisfactory as we would have preferred a better battery backup. Moreover, the absence of fast charging can be a disappointment for some.

Price
The Honor 9N is a really good smartphone. We tested the 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage variant which is priced at Rs 13,999. At this price point the Honor 9N is not a bad phone at all. It offers an excellent design, a powerful processor and a satisfactory camera experience. On the other hand, its rival Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro also offers somewhat same processing power but at a higher price tag of Rs 14,999. Moreover, the Honor 9N also comes in other variants starting at Rs 11,999 which definitely makes it worth the money. So, if you want to upgrade to a budget smartphone then you can definitely consider going for the Honor 9N.
